Since the passing of Proposition 8, gay rights activists vow to continue their efforts in legalizing same sex marriages in California. Neither side is ready to sit still and rejoice or mourn the decision from the past ballot. Both feel this is just the beginning of the battle in California.
Those backing Prop 8 are already gathering supporters for the next ballot initiative in 2010 and appear to have already raised large amounts of money. However, what is more interesting is the mixed response of GLBT activists regarding future steps. Incidentally, there are some activists who feel that they should try again in 2010 while many feel that 2010 is too early and the next actual battle should be in 2012. They feel that while thought-process and mindsets can be changed, it requires time and 2010 is much too soon to expect any clear change in how people feel about the issue. This camp believes that going in for a vote in 2010 would almost certainly waste their resources on another loss, which could actually prove to be more fatal in the long term.
Despite the split in strategy among GLBT activists, all are united on the front that any fundamental change requires a clear planning and monetary support. Fund raising has already begun for the next vote. In addition to raising more funds, leaders in the GBLT activist community have decided to decentralize organizational structure and ramp up recruiting efforts across the Southern part of the state. In short, everyone is prepared to fight tooth and nail in the next ballot.
