Californians Settle For Part-Time Work
It has recently been reported that nearly 1.4 million Californians have settled for part-time work due to poor economic conditions and a battered job market. According to the California Employment Development Department, 8.1% of the work force is made up of part timers. This is a roughly a 50% increase over 2008. Though recent reports have suggested a drop in unemployment and increases in corporate hiring, the fact still remains that there is not enough demand to accommodate all those that want full time jobs. A recent state labor report cited that 78% of those surveyed who were currently working part-time jobs were indeed looking for full-time work. As much as elected officials and economists have celebrated the recent positive signs that we are getting out of this recession, it should still be noted that many Californians are still not able to work to their full capacity. There is still a lot of work left to be done to get to a full recovery. Add a CommentPlease login in order to vote or add a comment. If you are a new user then please register here.
Comments (4)This is yet another example that not enough is being done on the labor front. More labor laws need to be put into place to protect workers! Companies are purposely taking on part time people so as to avoid health benefits and other standard fair labor practices. Good point! No one mentions this when you hear all the stories that California will see job growth this year. This is a very telling sign that business owners don't quite think things are turned around. Well said! No one seems to be focusing on this key stat. This is a very overlooked point in the debate! |
