Governor Schwarzenegger On Offshoring Prisoners

420

Governor Schwarzenegger recently voiced support for sending 20,000+ illegal inmates who are currently in California prisons to offshore prisons in Mexico.  These offshore Mexican prisons will be run by Mexico but fully funded by California.  The obvious goal here is to reduce costs for California.  Schwarzenegger has estimated that costs to run such facilities in Mexico would be about 50% cheaper than in California.

This is a pretty radical idea and one that would unlikely get past the legislature, but none the less it is the type of out of box thinking that is going to be needed by state officials in order to deal with a daunting budget nightmare.

Definitely an excellent idea! Not so sure this is will become a reality, but certainly shows creativity on Schwarzenegger's part. After all these are all illegals in the first place and why should I have to pay 50% more just to house them in CA.

A great as an idea this is, it will never fly! A proposal like this stands no chance when legally challenged. The again maybe voters will vote to rewrite the law.
