5 Reasons Why Federal Immigration Reform Won't Work in California

Immigration

With all the recent attention being focused on the Obama administration's attempt at immigration reform many people have forgot that Congress also has an immigration reform bill in the works that is very much in line with George Bush's plan of amnesty for illegals along with more social welfare components.  This will fail and will fail hard in California due to a combination of flaws in the bill as well as the current economic state we are in.  Here are a few simple reasons why:

  1. California lost over 20,400 jobs in February 2010 alone! According to the Employment Development Department of California, this was the latest figure that points to the terrible employment conditions facing the state. It is highly unlikely that Californians will want the bipartisan immigration bill by Democratic and Republican senators Charles Schumer and Lindsey Graham. Considering the amount of legal residents out of work, cheaper labor for already scarce jobs will not win over the constituents of the state.

  2. Not owning up to an illegal status. It appears highly unlikely that illegal immigrants currently living in America will owe up their illegal status and admit to living in America illegally. They know they are violating laws and it is highly unlikely many are willing to move back to their home countries and get back in line for legal entry.

  3. What is the truth? Have illegals really been living in the U.S. for the time they state? There is no confirmation or documentation of how long illegal immigrants have actually been residing in the U.S. How can we verify what illegals may state is the truth in regards to the time they have been in the U.S. . It is not unlikely people will do or saying anything to get approval to live and work in America.

  4. Too much social welfare in the proposed bill . With a large number of U.S. citizens themselves facing illiteracy, the idea of teaching English to the illegals who are permitted to stay is completely absurd.

  5. The U.S. should give incentives to its own citizens. The proposal to grant green cards to immigrants who will achieve a master's or doctorate in science, technology, engineering or math from a U.S. university should instead be focused toward U.S. citizens. The U.S. government should be encouraging its own citizens with incentives to earn a decent education.

No amount of reform will correct fundamental problems in the system.  This is surely a country that welcomes immigration and diversity, but in a fair and controlled manner.  The constant flow of illegal immigrants must be stopped and laws enacted to ensure a fair immigration process for both immigrants and U.S. Citizens.

Immigration law has to be mandated from the Federal government. By no means is the current working bill perfect, but immigration reform has to be Federally enforced and regulated for it to work.

This state most definitely needs immigration reform. The whole idea of verifying how long illegal immigrants have stayed here and deciding whether they get to stay or get deported is a complete pipe dream. The best solution to to naturalize all illegals and force them into a penalty tax while at the same time tightening the borders. No social welfare should be given whatsoever! You should be expected to learn English in your own time!

I can certainly agree with points 2,3, & 4. The first point is more political and I don't feel really gets in the way of immigration reform. Most of the people out of work probably fall outside the segments of jobs in reference to the 20K jobs lost. Your last point is way off base! This country has a shortage of students in the math and sciences. We need more technical workers. Green card holders can contribute to this. Besides most of the kids in school here are not illegal and are instead on student visas.
