Charles M. Calderon

  • Biography:

    Assemblyman Charles Calderon was re-elected to the Assembly in 2006 to serve the 58th District. Calderon represents the cities of Montebello and Pico Rivera along with portions of City of Industry, Downey, La Mirada and Whittier. In addition, he represents the communities of Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights, South San Gabriel, South San Jose Hills, Valinda and portions of East Los Angeles.
    Assemblyman Calderon served as a prosecutor with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office and was elected to the Montebello School Board. Most recently, he was appointed as a California Health Care Commissioner.

    Assemblyman Calderon was first elected to the Assembly in 1982 where he served until being elected to the California Senate in 1990. In September 1996, he made history as the first Latino elected as Senate Majority Leader. Legislation he sponsored holds drug dealers financially responsible for the harm caused by the drugs they sell. His sex-offender tracking bill forced convicted sex offenders to phone in weekly to computers so their whereabouts could be tracked by law enforcement.

    Assemblyman Calderon graduated from California State University, Los Angeles and earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of California. He is a partner with the law firm of Nossaman, Guthner, Knox & Elliott LLP. Assemblyman Calderon and his wife, Lisa, have three children.
