Joe Coto began his career as a social studies teacher in the Oakland Unified School District. After his election to the Oakland City Council, Mr. Coto was hired as the Superintendent of Oakland Unified. In 1988, Mr. Coto began a 14-year tenure as Superintendent of East Side Union High School District in San Jose.
Mr. Coto has also served as Chair of the Mexican Plaza Cultural Arts Center in San Jose and as President of the Latino Democratic Forum.
Mr. Coto and his wife, Camille, have been married for 33 years.
